Aqua Drops Pure · Concept to Creation
It started on my chair in 2018, fixing brows I'd just laminated. This is the story from there to Aqua Drops Pure.
I don't really want to write the usual launch post, because the usual launch post is three paragraphs of nothing and a link to buy. The real story of this product is about two years long and most of it is me being told no by people who know a lot more about chemistry than I do.
So I'm going to write the real one. Concept to creation. And to do that properly I have to go back further than 2024, because Pure doesn't make any sense unless you know where Aqua Drops came from in the first place.
Back to the beginning. Where Aqua Drops actually came from
This starts on the chair, not in a lab.
Back in 2018, early Brow Geek days, when lamination was going through the roof and everybody was doing it, I was watching what it was doing to people's brows. And it wasn't good. The kits the manufacturers were handing us at that point were lift and fix and that was it. Step one, step two, off you go. No repair step anywhere in the process.
So we were opening the hair up, restructuring it, closing it back down, and then sending the client out the door with nothing done about the damage we'd just caused. And then we'd colour on top of that. Everyone knew it was happening and nobody was doing anything about it.
So I started sorting it myself. I'd finish the treatment and then work a wee bit of bond builder (olaplex iykyk) through the brows afterwards, the hair world stuff, because the hair industry had already worked this out years before us and we were all just sitting there ignoring it. It wasn't elegant. It was an extra step, out of my own pocket, on every single client, and it was me patching a hole the manufacturers had left in the process.
But it worked. And doing that, over and over, client after client, for years, is what eventually put the question in my head.
Why am I doing three separate steps here. Why is repair a thing I bolt on at the end out of a different bottle from a different industry. Why can the colour not be doing the repairing at the same time as it's doing the colour, in the same window, out of the same tube.
That's the question that turned into Aqua Drops. The chair work started in 2018. The concept properly landed in 2022 into 2023, and that's when we built it.
So no, I didn't come up with it in a boardroom. I came up with it because I spent years fixing brows I'd laminated myself.
And the OG is still the OG
I need to say this properly, because I've watched other brands launch something new and quietly slag off their own back catalogue to make it look better, and I'm not doing that.
Aqua Drops original is what this business was built on. 2023. The first liquid hybrid brow tint in the world with a 53 peptide bond builder in it, and we're still the only bond builder hybrid on the market. Three years and nobody has done it. Seven shades, 60 applications a tube, 15ml, henna free, and it built the brow while it coloured it.
And let me be clear about the peptide thing, because it gets misunderstood. Peptides weren't new. They were all over skincare, all over wellness, everyone had them. What nobody had done was bring them across into brows. That crossover is ours. We're the ones who took a technology the skincare world had been using for years and worked out what it does for a brow hair mid colour service, and we're still the ones keeping it front and centre in this industry, because nobody else has picked it up and run with it.
So Pure doesn't replace the OG and it never was going to. They sit beside each other. Two different chemistries doing two different jobs in the same range. If you and your clients love your Nemesis, your Electra, your Zeus, then keep loving them, because I do. There's nothing wrong with a properly made oxidative tint and I'm not about to rubbish the products that put this business on the map just to sell you a new one.
Pure exists because there was a client sitting in the chair we couldn't serve. That's it. That's the reason.
Then, in 2024, a brief nobody wanted
The brief was one sentence.
Take PPD out completely and don't lose a single thing.
Not the stain, not the payoff on the skin, not the speed, and definitely not the skin side of the formula, which is the bit this whole brand is built on. Take out the thing the entire category leans on and come back with something that performs like it was never in there.
I put that in front of chemist after chemist and I kept getting the same answer back in slightly different words. You can have PPD free, or you can have that stain. Pick one.
I didn't want to pick one. I've never wanted to pick one. Picking one is the easy bit, and it isn't the job.
Vegas
Cosmoprof in Las Vegas is where this stopped being a project and turned into an obsession.
I walked that floor properly, and I mean properly. Every brow stand, every tint, every launch, every claim on every box, picking things up and turning them over and reading the ingredients like the nightmare I am.
And here's the thing, I'm not going to stand here and tell you we're the only PPD free product on the market, because we're not and there are a couple of others out there doing their own version of it. That's fine. Good, even. The more of us working on it the better.
But that isn't the gap, and this is the bit I want you to hear.
Not one of them was built on skin first technology. Not one. PPD free was the whole proposition and that's where it stopped. Take the ingredient out, put it on the box, done. Nobody was asking the second question, which is what are you putting in instead and what is it doing for the skin it's sitting on for the next twenty minutes.
That's the gap. Not PPD free. PPD free built on the skin first chemistry this brand has been developing since the beginning. That's what we've got and that's what nobody else has.
I flew home from that trip knowing exactly what we were building.
Which is more or less how everything I've ever made has started. I wanted a thing, it didn't exist, so we made it.
Now the bit I'm actually proud of. The pH
This is where I get geeky, so stay with me, because this is the part that makes the product work and it's the part nobody else in this category is talking about.
When you take PPD out of a tint you're not just removing an ingredient, you're removing the whole mechanism. Oxidative colour works by reaction. Small molecules go in, the developer opens things up, colour builds inside the hair. That's why it lasts and that's why the payoff is what it is.
Take the reaction away and you've got to find a completely different way to make colour stay put. And what a lot of PPD free formulas do at that point is give you a wash. It photographs beautifully, it's gone by day three, and everyone politely agrees not to bring it up.
We weren't doing that. So we went at it from the other end and we went after the pH.
Pure is direct dye chemistry, which means the colour is already colour when it goes on. There's no reaction needed to make it. But direct dyes only really grab in a specific acidic window, and that window is narrow. Sit too high and the colour never properly commits, it lifts and it rinses. Go too low and you're being unkind to skin, which defeats the whole point of us.
So the work, and this is where the two years actually went, was in holding the formula at exactly the right point at the moment it goes onto the brow. Acidic enough that the dye bonds hard into the keratin and stains the skin instantly. Supported enough that the skin's being looked after the whole time it's happening. That's what the glycolic acid is doing in there. It isn't there as a hero active for the box, it's the environment the entire formula needs to sit in to do its job.
We pushed that further than I've seen anyone push it, and that's why it stains. Get that band right and you get your payoff with no PPD anywhere near it. Get it wrong and you've made a tinted moisturiser for eyebrows.
It took version after version after version. But we got it.
What's actually in it
This is the bit I keep going on about and I'll keep going on about it. PPD free is being sold everywhere as a list of things a product hasn't got. Anybody can take stuff out. Taking out is the easy half, and it's the half that gets all the marketing. What did you put in.
So, what's in Pure, because this is the bit I want the industry looking at.
- Hydrolysed collagen, at the base of the formula. Not a wee sprinkle at the bottom of the INCI so we can put the word on the box. This is the first collagen infused formula we've ever made and it's built on it.
- The peptide complex, carried straight over from Aqua Drops. That was never up for negotiation with me.
- Niacinamide, because we're a skin first company and this product goes directly onto skin, gets held there and gets stained in. If I'm asking someone's skin to hold pigment, I'm going to look after it while it does.
- Sodium hyaluronate, hydrating in the same window the colour's developing.
- Argan oil, conditioning during the service instead of after it.
- A film former, which nobody ever talks about and everybody should, because it's what keeps the stain sitting exactly where you put it instead of creeping and going patchy on you halfway through.
Every one of those is in there because it's doing something. Nothing's in that tube to look good on a box.
That's the difference between clean and clever, and Pure is clever. Anyone can be PPD free. Being PPD free and skin first in the same tube is the hard part, and that's ours.
We were skin first before skin first was a phrase
People assume skin first turned up with the trend. It didn't.
It turned up with our original hybrid cleanser formula, years before anyone had it on a pitch deck. We were already asking the harder question, which isn't what's this doing to the hair, it's what's this doing to the skin underneath while it does it.
That was never an angle for us, it was the brief from day one. Which is why a collagen and niacinamide brow formula in 2026 isn't some pivot. It's the same brand, further down the same road it's always been on.
The names aren't random. They never are
Original Aqua Drops is Greek gods. Selene, Aphrodite, Apollo, Electra, Nemesis, Ares, Zeus. That was deliberate. That range is dramatic and it's powerful and it's built to be mixed, every shade with a personality strong enough to go up against another one. Gods fight with each other. That's exactly what that range does on the palette, and that's the point of it.
Pure isn't that, and giving it the same treatment would have been lazy.
Pure is Aura, Ignite, Lustre, Enigma and Onyx. Five shades, and they're tones, not characters. Light, fire, shine, mystery, stone. Quieter, more grown up, words about the finish you're getting rather than the god you're channelling that day.
I moved on purpose. The gods built this category. The tones are where we are now.
The packaging
I've wanted this look for years and I've finally got it.
Deep olive green with gold. Pantone 5747C on the base, Pantone 871C for the infinity mark, the gold drop and the accents. Soft touch finish. Same 15ml, 0.53oz tube as the original so nothing changes for you on the trolley.
It's version 7 of that artwork. Seven. Because I kept sending it back until it did the same job as the formula, which is to look like exactly what it is and not one thing more.
The brand's grown up and I'm not apologising for that.
Why it's called Pure
Two reasons and they're both true.
The obvious one is literal. Zero PPD. Pure is the honest word for what came out of it.
The other one is that Pure was always where this was going. Aqua Drops proved a hybrid could work. Pure is that same hybrid with nothing in it we didn't choose to put in it, and you don't get to Pure without every single thing that came before it. I wouldn't want to.
It's still a professional product and the patch test is still mandatory, by the way. PPD free doesn't mean the standards drop. Pro grade means pro discipline and that hasn't changed.
Where we are now
2026 is a new era for this business and I've earned every inch of it.
We brought peptides across into brows when they were a skincare technology and nobody in our world was using them, and we're still the only bond builder hybrid there is. We were skin first before the industry had a phrase for it. And now there's a PPD free collagen hybrid that stains properly and looks after the skin while it does it, which is the thing I was told for two years couldn't be done.
Other people are PPD free. Nobody else is doing this.
Eight years from that bench to this tube. Two of them on this formula alone, seven artwork versions, more binned batches than I'm going to admit to, and one very stubborn brief that never changed once.
And it all comes back to 2018 and a girl with a bottle of bond builder, annoyed about damage nobody else could be bothered fixing.
That's the whole thing. Concept to creation.
